There isn’t a single woman who didn’t watch “The Notebook” sometime in early adolescence, and didn’t fall in love with Brian Gosselin, and didn’t want to be Rachel McAdams (I know, we are obsessed with her, check out more posts about her characters). In the romantic drama movie set in the 1930’s and 40’s, we witness a stunning love story, and an even more stunning style. In today’s post we will get the vintage look.
Allie Hamilton’s style choices evolve during the movie, reflecting her adventure from a privileged young girl within the 1930′ to a mature person in the late 40’s.
In the first part of the movie, Allie is regularly visible sporting stylish and feminine clothes standard of the generation. Her clothes include tender fabrics, floral patterns, and romantic details like lace and ruffles, reflecting her affluent history and the societal norms of the time. Her hair is styled in glamorous waves or updos.
As the story progresses and Allie’s relationship with Noah deepens, her fashion choices become more relaxed and informal, mirroring her newfound experience of freedom and authenticity. She is regularly seen in less complicated clothes or blouses paired with skirts, reflecting her developing independence and her loving feelings towards Noah.
In the later scenes set within the late Forties, Allie’s style selections turn out to be extra tailored and sensible, reflecting the adjustments brought about with the aid of World War II and her reports in the course of the intervening years. She wears structured suits and blouses, showcasing a more mature and delicate fashion that reflects her personal boom and resilience.
So how can we create the vintage look that characterizes the film?
We can see that the looks mostly consist of dresses, tailored looks, feminine cuts, high heels typical of the period and of course the meticulous hairstyles. For those who connect with the vintage look, and feel like going back in time, with the help of “ThreadUp” we created several outfits that will turn heads while walking down the street.
We are not looking to create the exact look, but to have fun with our creativity.
Especially since ThreadUp is a website that sells second-hand clothes, I encourage you to be open-minded as much as you can and find lots of great options. Here are some:
Let’s start with the vintage experts:
Her sense of fashion, and the dedication to the journey after the iconic dress from the movie led the vintage blogger miss monmon to find an exact design of Ellie’s beautiful blue lake dress. Look at how elegantly she wears the dress, and pay attention to the small details such as the meticulous hair and makeup that complete the look and elevate it to the maximum.
Now, our variations
Here is the scene from which we drew inspiration for today’s look
Let’s start with a few options for dresses. They all have a floral print but in different sizes and prints, and they all hug the waist, which creates a flattering and feminine look.
As for the shoes, I tried to find something similar to what Allie wore, but also different to make it my own:
One last thing before completing the look, watch how the YouTuber Jackie Wyers is getting her hair done:
That’s it, you are ready to be the most “vintage” in the room.
I hope you guys like the look I created. There is so much more you can do, get inspired, go wild! See you in next post.
