Nana is an anime from 2006 that over the years has earned a lot of praise for its storytelling, characters, music, and fashion that highlights each character. One of the main characters Nana Komatsu or Hachi as she is often called has a distinctive style that many people over the years have wanted to replicate because of how feminine it is tied with frills and lace details. Hachi’s style strongly contrast with Nana Osaki’s style by wearing light colors that give a contrast when you compare her to Nana who wears punk-style clothing who she meets on the train.
Hachi is one of the characters that we see grow in the season and truly mature because, at the beginning of the series, we see that she is young and a bit naive. In the first episode, we see Hachi wearing a white skirt with a black shirt, a pink cardigan, platform boots, and a heart hairpin, this outfit shows her feminine style and her bright personality. From this first episode, we can tell that Hachi is a bubbly girl and she is a romantic from the way she talks, acts, and even in her outfit .
Hachi’s style in art school
Although many people want to replicate Hachi’s style it is never quite right because Hachi’s style changes through the series as she changes. After the first episode, we see a flashback to Hachi as a teenager and we see her dress in Gyaru-inspired styles until she starts to go to art school with Junko in which she changes her style again for a more artsy or earthy style. Another big change we see in her is that she cut her hair to a pixie style which adds to her new style that is more boyish than anything we see her wear in the rest of the series. She wears scarves on her hair which is something that stays consistent throughout the series and she mainly wears green, brown, and yellows.
Hachi’s Style in Tokyo
When she moved to Tokyo and started to be roommates with Nana we see her change her style again. This is the style that Hachi is most known for which consists mainly of dresses, frills, Lacey clothes. She mainly thrifted, and wearing Vivian Westwood accessories. This shows that living with Nana influences her because, Hachi did not wear any Vivian Westwood. Nana and her band always wear Vivian Westwood.
After she starts to work in the office she starts to wear clothes that are office-inspire clothes such as knee-length skirts with more vintage-inspired styles from the 1960s. This helps to mark her becoming more independent and we see her style developing and her hair growing to show her growth as a character. I think this shows the amount of detail that Ai Yazawa puts into the style of the characters.
The biggest change in Hachi’s life is her pregnancy and marriage to Takumi and during this time she also changes her style in which she toned down and used simple but feminine styles. When she married Takumi she stopped wearing Vivian West’s word, even though she still wears pearls and doesn’t have accessories as much as before. This change must have happened because Hachi doesn’t want to bring attention to herself. After all, Takumi likes to be the one in charge and have attention.
Hachi’s style after moving out
All of these changes in Hachi’s style not only mark the change in Hachi’s life but in how Hachi is changing. Despite all of these changes in her style some things stay consistent like the scarves, wearing pearls, and wearing feminine styles. Hachi is one of the favorite characters from Nana due to her bubbly personality and her story that resonates with many young women. Hachi has one of the most difficult styles to replicate despite many people on social media wanting to replicate it. Her style is often used as an inspiration and despite the series coming out in 2006, her style is timeless which is why there are still Nana fans who replicate their outfits.
