It’s impossible to read the title without singing “Barbie Girl” in my head. Before we start, press play, turn up the volume, and listen to Aqua. She was the real Barbie, years before Margot Robbie:

Now that we’re in the mood, let’s talk about the Barbie movie directed by Greta Gerwig, starring the flawless Margot Robbie and the handsome Ryan Gosselin. Briefly and without spoilers, the film introduces Barbie and her journey of self-discovery in Barbieland and on Earth.

Besides the storyline, I think the aesthetic of the film is undoubtedly magical. Gerwig managed to convey amazingly the beautiful, plastic, enviable, and perfect world of the beautiful doll. In fact, it was hard not to feel nostalgic as a girl who learned all her life skills from playing with my dozen Barbies.

So today, I want to talk about the world’s obsession with Barbie even before the movie was released, and certainly when it was released. A fashion phenomenon has started and it is to dress up like Barbie for the screening of the film in cinemas.

Moreover, the level of effort is just going up and up. Pink is everyone’s favorite color right now, and the fans of the trend celebrate with bold and sometimes smile-inducing looks (because what’s the problem with showing up at the office with a pink-tulle-layered skirt and a cowboy hat as a product manager?).

Margot Robbie, who makes even my most beautiful Barbies look neglected, presented some unforgettable looks and these are some of them:

Even an untrained eye like mine recognizes Chanel in the scenes. Until I  can afford to pay for the luxury items:

Barbie-How Do You Do This?

So it turns out that the iconic pink and white checkered dress can be purchased quite easily. A quick search on Poshmark will present several sellers selling this dress.

However, I’m not sure about the quality, because it looks like something sold as a costume. It’s a 150$ dress which is not cheap, but hey- you’ll look like Margot Robbie!

If you want a similar dress, but looking for a more realistic look less of a costume, take a look at Zara’s special edition dress. Not cheap, but it’s also not sustainable because it’s from Zara so I’m not a big fan of fast fashion, but you can buy this dress second-hand and not buy a brand new dress. Pair it with Anne Klein’s pink sandals. I swear my Barbie had sandals just like these!

However, if this total look is too much for you, and you are more of a Barbie girl in a human’s world, try incorporating one or two pink items into your wardrobe, because on Wednesdays we wear pink anyway… Can you guess what the next post will be about?
